I read several dozen stories a year from miserable, lonely guys who insist that women won’t come near them despite the fact that they are just the nicest guys in the world.

..I’m asking what do you offer? Are you smart? Funny? Interesting? Talented? Ambitious? Creative? OK, now what do you do to demonstrate those attributes to the world? Don’t say that you’re a nice guy — that’s the bare minimum.

I think I’m finally starting to understand why a lot of people have a problem with this whole “masculism” thing that’s been going on. Originally, I didn’t see the problem with it, because I thought it was just men talking about problems related to gender trouble, without attempting to combat or attack women or feminism, and that was something I wanted to stand behind. I thought it was just guys sharing problems they’ve had with gender and trying to find support. I thought it was something that was in accordance with feminism, not opposed to it, so I didn’t quite see the issue: I thought we should just all work together, instead of fighting each other.

Then I just read “invisiblemale’s” comment on this article, and I think I’m starting to see the problem. If this kind of horrible, combative, sexist talk is representative of the ‘masculism’ movement that has been popping up, then it is not what I thought it was, and definitely not something I want to support.

Meggie, I think I’m finally starting to get the reasoning behind some of the posts you have shared, and what it is that they were saying. If they’ve been facing comments like ‘invisiblemale’s’ comments, rather than the kind of thing that I actually thought should be going on, then what they were saying makes sense. I didn’t realize that this was the kind of thing that people were saying. I didn’t realize people were attacking women and trying to disguise it as “men’s rights”, but that’s exactly what ‘invisiblemale’ is doing here, and it’s quite disgusting and unreasonable. If this is the kind of mindset being fought, then count me in.

The rest of these comments are quite horrible as well. I think the “The comments on any article about feminism justify feminism.” quote kinda sums it up.

Liberation from gender norms does not happen by being complete assholes to people who don’t share your gender. Feminism thinks about how gender roles negatively affect men- and trans*-identifying, as well as women-identifying people. I’ll take MRAs seriously when they think concertedly about the well-being of anyone other than themselves.

I think that what this would mean,what this means is that, yes, if you’re one of those people who regularly insists on making false rape accusations one of the foci of discussions on rape (in Britain), then you’re pretty much trying to derail any substantive, productive conversations about rape. Just probabilistically speaking. I’m sure you didn’t mean to.

Today we had a substitute teacher for one of my law classes. A number of unfortunate things occurred.

1) The teacher, who has both taught at university and is a licensed legal practitioner, referred to a court procedure as “retarded.” She even made a brief excuse afterward, to the effect of: “I know that’s not a nice word to use, but the procedure really is retarded.” Ableism and apologism. Good job, educator. I know very well that legal professionals and the legal system more broadly are not known for their fair treatment of marginalized people, but come on. (There have been some notable exceptions, such as when one professor told us about how different types of privilege affects the litigation of insurance claims).

2) Said teacher proceeded to chew gum loudly and visibly throughout class. This annoyed me for a while, but then I began to wonder whether she might have some legitimate reason to chew gum. Maybe she has anxiety and chewing gum helps her to relax? I thought. I began to wonder if I it was ableist of me to be contemptuously irritated by her gum chewing.

3) Said teacher’s lecturing style was erratic and melodramatic. This in itself is not normally a problem for me. Except that her erratic melodrama involved passionate but shockingly trite tangents such as:

“Aren’t expressions GREAT?! You can say things without having to EXPLAIN THEM!? WOW you can save so much TIME! Like once I was late for a class, and the administrative assistant said to me, ‘You snooze, you lose.’ And I thought about how great that is. That’s all she had to say! Nothing to add to that. Anyways, where were we?”

I started to wonder if she was high. Then I started to wonder whether it is ableist to wonder whether someone is high.

I don’t think I learned anything about law during the class.
